Document Details : Title: Stabilitas als Kontrapunkt Subtitle: Monastisches Leben und spirituelle Praxis heute Author(s): QUARTIER, Thomas Journal: Studies in Spirituality Volume: 23 Date: 2013 Pages: 81-100 DOI: 10.2143/SIS.23.0.3007314 Abstract : Monastic stability seems to contradict modern ways of life in several respects. The individual is expected to lead a flexible life, social bonds are fluid and societal institutions seem to lack general aims and values. However, as soon as one is confronted with contingency, the need for a stable frame of reference is very urgent, also to modernized people. In this article, the author explores monastic stability in contemporary society. He focuses on examples of stability in politically difficult surroundings and distinguishes four layers of stability from a ritual point of view: personal, social, societal and religious ‘stabilitas’. These layers are analyzed in a Benedictine perspective. Finally, a model of monastic stability in modern society is sketched, that can be interpreted as a counterpoint to societal trends today. |
