Junius's Copy of Prudentius in Leiden University Library Author(s): DERKSEN, Susan Journal: Lias Volume: 38 Issue: 2 Date: 2011 Pages: 207-223 DOI: 10.2143/LIAS.38.2.2159016 Abstract : Among the large Vossius collection in Leiden University Library, many printed books show the signs of former owners. One of these early modern scholars was the multitalented Franciscus Junius F.F. (1591-1677), who was an uncle of Isaac Vossius (1618-1689). Vossius’s copy of the collected works of Aurelius Prudentius Clemens does not only contain many annotations in Junius’s clear hand, but also allows the modern reader to reconstruct a ‘life story’ of this book, which starts with the first owner and ends with the acquisition by Leiden University Library. Interesting findings from this reconstruction include: several names of former owners, a copied bookplate, and the suggestion that this book could indirectly have been one of the sources by means of which Nicolaas Heinsius created a new edition of Prudentius. |
