Document Details : Title: Het bereik van het mentale Subtitle: Van uitgebreid naar omvattend geheugen Author(s): MYIN, Erik , ZAHIDI, Karim Journal: Tijdschrift voor Filosofie Volume: 74 Issue: 1 Date: 2012 Pages: 103-127 DOI: 10.2143/TVF.74.1.2152714 Abstract : According to the Extended Mind Thesis, the mind can extend so as to include parts of the environment, such as notes in a notebook. Internalists about the mind, according to whom the mind remains confined to the brain or body, have forcefully criticized the thesis. In this paper, a quite different critique of the Extended Mind will be offered: rather than departing too much from internalism, as has been suggested, this thesis stays too closely bound to it. Referring to memory, it will be argued that memory is only extendable if a questionable internalist picture of memory is presupposed. An alternative picture of memory is proposed which breaks more radically with internalism, and the idea of memory and mind as Extensive rather than as Extended, is proposed. |
