Document Details : Title: The Feelings of the Master as Articles of Faith or Medicine against Heresy? Subtitle: Jansenius' Polemics against the 'New Pelagians' Author(s): STANCIU, Diana Journal: Ephemerides Theologicae Lovanienses Volume: 87 Issue: 4 Date: 2011 Pages: 393-418 DOI: 10.2143/ETL.87.4.2149595 Abstract : The present study takes into account the outcomes of the latest research both on Jansenius, on one side, and on Pelagius and the Pelagians, on the other side, and it also offers a new intuition about the statute of Jansenius’ Augustinus. It demonstrates that Jansenius’ work is more than just a 'historical' study and that it actually contains marked polemic hints. Both Jansenius’ sources and his methods and presuppositions are carefully studied in order to demonstrate that Jansenius actually transcends the historical debate in order to hint at similar issues in his time, namely the seventeenth-century debates on grace, predestination and free will generated by the works of Molina, Suaréz and Lessius, among others. Moreover, in this endeavour, Jansenius is not totally indebted to Augustine’s views and authority, as might be expected, but he also tries to defend these views and authority while quoting and discussing other sources. |
