Document Details : Title: Inculturation and the Recognition of the Other Subtitle: Matteo Ricci's Legacy in the Christian-Confucian Context Author(s): CHUNG, Paul S. Journal: Studies in Interreligious Dialogue Volume: 20 Issue: 1 Date: 2010 Pages: 79-97 DOI: 10.2143/SID.20.1.2050496 Abstract : Prophetic dialogue is an indispensable part of directing current studies of mission in the ecumenical and global context. A prophetic dialogue with other faith communities becomes effective in a hermeneutical-anthropological endeavor of translating and interpreting the biblical narrative in the context of World Christianity. This endeavor engages the anthropological study of culture in a non-ethnocentric configuration. Thus inculturation becomes a central locus in characterizing missiological perspectives on prophetic dialogue. Matteo Ricci’s mission in sixteenth-century China deserves attention with respect to this task. This article presents a historical and theological analysis of Ricci’s interaction with the Confucian belief system and the ethical self. It also includes a critical evaluation of Ricci’s attitude toward Buddhism and Taoism. |
