Document Details : Title: 'Kom, komkommer' Subtitle: Over herhaling, verdubbeling, gelijkenis en variatie in Het verdriet van België Author(s): DEBERGH, Gwennie Journal: Spiegel der Letteren Volume: 51 Issue: 1 Date: 2009 Pages: 71-98 DOI: 10.2143/SDL.51.1.2036264 Abstract : This article examines the functions of repetitions and doublings in Hugo Claus’s novel The Sorrow of Belgium. In a first step it provides an overview of the countless examples of doublings and variations that are to be found on the micro-level of the text. Secondly, the function of these repetitions is scrutinized on the macro-level of the textual structure, characterized by a complex form of embedded narratives. In the words of Erich Auerbach and Hayden White, this structure can be called ‘figural’. It replaces the traditional, static hierarchy between reality and fiction with a dynamic interaction that blurs the hierarchy. |
