Abstract :
This article is a companion piece to the author’s earlier contribution to this journal, published in 2005 and focusing on the question if there is a Dutch form of New Historicism. The present contribution continues the methodological survey of Dutch Early Modern Literary Studies begun in the previous one. While the earlier piece focused on the formative decade between 1973 and 1984, in which Marijke Spies outlined a paradigm of historicist criticism that remained highly influential up to today, the new contribution takes as its main subject a number of innovative contributions by critics who attempted to sidestep Spies’ paradigm. The work of these critics – Lia van Gemert, Arie Gelderblom and Frans-Willem Korsten – is analysed here against the backdrop of the influential reading method of New Historicism that began to dominate the international field of Early Modern Literary Studies in the same period.
