Document Details : Title: The Foundations of St. John of the Cross' Spiritual Theology in the Thought and Writings of Pseudo-Dionysius Author(s): WLUSEK, Steven Journal: Studies in Spirituality Volume: 18 Date: 2008 Pages: 195-213 DOI: 10.2143/SIS.18.0.2033289 Abstract : This paper reveals remarkable parallels between the writings of Pseudo-Dionysius and St. John of the Cross, demonstrating the credence St. John gave to these earlier writings, and the reliance his own thought had upon them, thereby shaping his articulation of the spiritual itinerary. The investigation presented in this article juxtaposes teachings of Pseudo-Dionysius with specific texts from John’s literary corpus. The evidence gives clear demonstration that Pseudo-Dionysius’ writings had a major influence upon the development of St. John of the Cross’ spiritual theology. It reveals that St. John’s spirituality of ascent to union with God through progressive stages of darkness and detachment – though tremendously creative and significant – were steeped in the mystical tradition which had been articulated a millennium earlier by his predecessor Pseudo-Dionysius. |
