The advancement in and development of the virtues, a concept that reached the adherents of the Modern Devotion primarily through the Franciscan David of Augsburg (ca. 1200-1272) and his influential spiritual handbook Profectus religiosorum, is a distinguishing characteristic of devout spirituality. In order to understand the meaning and function of the concept of profectus virtutum in the thought of David of Augsburg and the Modern Devotion (as explained in my article ‘Profectus virtutum: The roots of devout moral praxis’), this article traces the genealogy of the concept from the first ages of Christianity up to the Profectus religiosorum of David of Augsburg. |
