Journal: Le Muséon Volume: 120 Issue: 3-4 Date: 2007 Pages: 351-364 DOI: 10.2143/MUS.120.3.2024680 Abstract : This article seeks to define the phonetic conditions and dialectal distribution of the sound change *t > š in Ṭyare, a dialect cluster within North-Eastern Neo-Aramaic (NENA). Hardly any reliable information concerning this shift can be learnt from the scholarly literature, for it is almost entirely based on Codex Sachau 337, a late nineteenth century manuscript marred by numerous hyper-corrections, ghost-forms and non-Ṭyare dialectal forms and lexemes, which appear alongside some genuine Ṭyare forms. In light of the author’s research with Ṭyare speakers, it is concluded that the sound change *t > š has initially occurred only after y or i, as a result of partial assimilation, and that it is found in all but four Ṭyare dialects located in the western and southwestern periphery of Ṭyare territory. |
