Document Details : Title: Generative Phonology and the Explanation of Phonological Change Author(s): URIŢESCU, Dorin Journal: Orbis Volume: 35 Date: 1988-1990 Pages: 5-32 DOI: 10.2143/ORB.35.0.2012824 Abstract : The purpose of this paper is to discuss some developments of generative phonology (especially aspects of Natural Phonology and Natural Generative Phonology) with their implications for a theory of phonological change. These aspects will refer not only to diachronic generative phonology, but also to synchronic phonology, since some synchronic aspects are based on historical data, and, on the other hand, some diachronic explanations are the result of synchronic solutions adopted by different directions of generative phonology. As somme of the recent developments of generative phonology are based on the integration if findings already extant in non-generative linguistic approaches, reference to these approaches will also be made. |
