Document Details : Title: Vrouwen in mannenkleren en Spinoza Subtitle: De Kloekmoedige land- en zee-heldin (1682) als verpakking van de filosofie van Spinoza Author(s): WORTEL, Dick Journal: Spiegel der Letteren Volume: 48 Issue: 1 Date: 2006 Pages: 27-55 DOI: 10.2143/SDL.48.1.2005609 Abstract : The dissertation by Inger Leemans which appeared in 2002 indicates an influence of the radical Enlightenment on the content of pornographic novels published in the Dutch Republic between 1650 and 1700. She concludes that this influence is very strong on the novels she has researched. She also deduces that the philosophies of Descartes and Spinoza were hidden in the storylines of the novels. In her view, this was the only way to make the forbidden philosophies known to the broad public. Her conclusion raises the interesting question whether this influence also concerns other, non-pornographic novels which appeared in the same period. This article tries to prove that the novel the Kloekmoedige Land- en Zee-Heldin [The Courageous Land and Sea Heroine], published in 1682, also shows a strong influence of the philosophical ideas of Cartesianism and Spinozism. |
