Abstract :
In his nearly forgotten novel Levenslust (1868), Conscience might be the first author within the Netherlands and Flanders to amply write about the emerging phenomenon of holiday tourism. He combines the new topic with a remarkable, sentimental plot which is supported by a number of fantastic and magnetic twists and which unusually clearly refers to all kinds of doubts that the sentimental novel typically rather suppresses.
