Document Details : Title: Latijn in de Nederlanden in de achttiende eeuw Author(s): VAN MIERT, Dirk Journal: Spiegel der Letteren Volume: 46 Issue: 3-4 Date: 2004 Pages: 415-431 DOI: 10.2143/SDL.46.3.2004788 Abstract : This paper presents a survey of eighteenth-century Neolatin studies in the Netherlands. The interest of professional neolatinists in this period is limited, due to the fact that this century did not produce important thinkers who mastered a fine literary Latin. Nevertheless, Latin continued to play an important role in literary and scholarly life, and this is why studies in eighteenth-century Latin texts are carried out almost exclusively by historians of academic disciplines. Because knowledge of Latin is diminishing with each generation of scholars, future professional Latin philologists are expected to work more and more closely together with literary and cultural historians. |
