Document Details : Title: Nadrukker met 'haviksklaauwen' Subtitle: De op- en neergang van de boekhandel in de achttiende eeuw Author(s): VAN VLIET, Rietje Journal: Spiegel der Letteren Volume: 46 Issue: 3-4 Date: 2004 Pages: 367-380 DOI: 10.2143/SDL.46.3.2004784 Abstract : On the basis of the case of Jean-André-François Bassompierre (1709-1777), a bookseller and publisher from Liège notorious for his extremely aggressive piracy practices, this article discusses the legislation on the continent with regard to copyright, censorship and privileges. The international position of Dutch publishers and those from the principality of Liège are explained, especially their relation to the ‘Buchmessen’ in Leipzig, where they played a very important role in the international book trade. In the last quarter of the eighteenth century Dutch booksellers, however, did not frequent this book fair anymore, but were represented by a commissionaire only. Booksellers in general then targeted their audiences in a more direct way. More generally, after decades of successes until the 1780’s, the Dutch book trade entered a period of relative deterioration. |
