Abstract :
The Studentenschetsen [Sketches from the students’ life] published by Johannes Kneppelhout in 1839-1840 under the pen name of Klikspaan [Tattler] is one of the few Dutch books of the nineteenth century which deserve a place in European literature. Relying on a long tradition of moralistic student literature and following English character-sketches as well as the French Physiognomies, the author most wittily describes Leiden student life of his time. The present scholarly edition by Annemarie Kets, Mariëlle Lenders and Olf Praamstra is extensively annotated and thoroughly traces the links of the text with contemporary life and literature – though with too little attention for its literary value and the traditions of text and illustrations.
