Journal: Le Muséon Volume: 118 Issue: 1-2 Date: 2005 Pages: 151-170 DOI: 10.2143/MUS.118.1.616489 Abstract : On the basis of data from extant codices and earlier descriptions of others whose current whereabouts are unknown this study seeks to reconstruct the profile of the Trapezuntine region of Hamšēn from manuscripts locally, supplemented by those copied or owned by Hamšēnc‘is of diverse provenance, and others whose contents relate to the area. The significance of the political, cultural, religious, and economic information these documents attest is heightened by the fact that there exists no major regional history. With regard to typology, most manuscripts are liturgical, the majority being ritual books, and range chronologically from the 15th century till 1812, most emanating from the Monastery of St. Xač‘ik the Father near the village of Ełnovit. Locally copied manuscripts generally belong to deacons and lower c1ergy, while those copied elsewhere by or for Hamšēnc‘is reveal the tendency for local clergy to continue their education outside. The widespread use of parchment as the material for writing seems to cohere with the role of animal husbandry in the local economy. |
