Abstract :
In recent years there have been several studies devoted to the occurrences of the geographical name Šušan in texts from Babylonia. It has been identified with the Elamite capital Susa in two texts from Ur, and probably also in the texts from the Murašû archive from Nippur. In these instances the place name is spelled EREN.KI, KUR šu-šá-an, or šu-šá-an.KI. On the other hand, the Susan mentioned in three texts from the Borsippa archive (spelled URU su-sá-an), as well as the Šušan where VS 4 194 (URUšu-šá-an) and VS 6 155 (šu-šá-an.KI) were drafted, refers not to the major city of Susa in Elam, but to a town on the river in Northern Babylonia. Inhabitants of Borsippa had to pay to the gugallu of Borsippa for the urasu-duty of towing boats to the quay of this river town Šušan, and tenants of bow fiefs, which were located at Šušan and which were owned by the temples of Borsippa and Babylon, paid their taxes and duties in Šušan.
