Abstract :
First performed at the Teatro Italiano in Cairo on Christmas Eve, 24 December 1871, Verdi's Aïda is the only opera conceived in Egypt by an Egyptologist. As is well-known, the great French Egyptologist Auguste Mariette (1821-81) wrote the opera's scenario. But although there is much that is obviously Egyptian in Aïda, common opinion holds that the name of its illustrious heroine is not.
