Abstract :

In 1390-1391, a company of Venetian merchants with their servants and their merchandises left Tana to go towards an unknown destination near the south of the Caspian Sea, in 'Persia'. They passed by Sarai, Astrakhan, Mandjar, Derbent, Sabaran and Samaki, last place attested. This voyage has been reconstructed by the analyse of the documents and of the accounts relating to the administration of the inheritance (commissaria) of two of these merchants: Andriolo Malipiero and Zanin da Molin, died in 'Persia' because of an epidemic. This article illustrates the voyage and its stages, the political and social conditions found there, the actors and their commercial activities. This is a rare testimony of a commercial campaign towards the Central Asia at the end of the XIVth century.
