Document Details : Title: Syntax and Translation Greek Author(s): LUST, Johan Journal: Ephemerides Theologicae Lovanienses Volume: 77 Issue: 4 Date: Dec. 2001 Pages: 395-401 DOI: 10.2143/ETL.77.4.575 Abstract : In the introduction to the first volume of A Greek-English Lexicon of the Septuagint a description was given of the special character of the Greek of the Septuagint. With most recent scholars I defended there the thesis that the language of the Septuagint is not a Jewish-Greek dialect, nor a “supernatural language of the Holy Spirit”. It is first of all translation Greek. I added that, although it may be based on it, it cannot simply be characterized as Koine Greek. In passing I noted: “This is most obvious on the level of syntax and style. The order of the words in the translation most often closely sticks to that of the Hebrew original. In fact, in many passages, the Hebrew and the Greek can be put in parallel columns, word by word. The result is that the syntax of the Septuagint is Hebrew rather than Greek”. |
