Abstract :
The Roman document on ‘The Greek and the Latin Traditions Regarding the Procession of the Holy Spirit’ of 1995 was the topic of a consultation of members of different Eastern and Western Churches at Vienna in May 1998, which was organized by the Foundation Pro Oriente, Vienna. The consultation issued a memorandum in which one finds besides fundamental problems also further recommendations. The fundamental problems include that the document is a unilateral document and not an ecumenical statement, that the tradition about the procession of the Holy Spirit is not as uniform as presented in the document, and that not enough distinction is made between the immanent Trinity and the economic Trinity. The recommendations concern mainly the necessity of a further exploration of the issue in a broader ecumenical context, especially with regard to the previous results of the work of Faith and Order (the consultations of Klingenthal of 1978 and 1979 and the report on Confessing the One Faith of 1991).
