Abstract :
The Uzboy is the ancient bed of the Amu Darya river when it flowed into the Caspian Sea, from the Tertiary up to the recent Quaternary era, and then episodically up to the 16th century AD. References and data taken from the literature have been gathered and used in order to describe this former stream, to reconstitute and discuss its geological history, its evolution and the question of permanent settlements on its banks. A theoretical study on the hydrological characteristics of the Uzboy bed and of the complex Amu Darya-Aral-Uzboy water system gives valuable information on the water flow in the Uzboy channel during the last five millennia.
