Abstract :
Seventeenth-century family portraits and paintings depicting Antwerp art collections show wooden mouldings around rooms at three-quarters height. They are adorned with wall coverings and serve as ledges on which paintings or sculptures sit. Such mouldings have to date not been found in situ, but they seem nevertheless to have been actual interior elements and not simply products of the painter’s fantasy. Records of legal proceedings between the Antwerp frame-makers who fell under the Guild of St Luke, and the cabinetmakers’ guild indicate that such elements did indeed exist.
