Abstract :
In this issue, there are contributions from some prominent philosophers who are at the forefront of contemporary discussion about ethics, economics and religion. They are Brian Barry, Michael Sandel and Stanley Hauerwas. While Barry is renowned as a liberal philosopher, Sandel and Hauerwas have lost their confidence in liberal assumptions. Yet one should not be misled by the term 'liberal'. The brand of liberalism criticized by Sandel and Hauerwas does not easily apply to Barry's position. Liberalism, according to Barry, does not primarily imply the preservation of as much freedom as possible, but rather the creation of equal opportunities and the attainment of as just as possible a distribution of resources and opportunities.
