It concerns the tension between faith and the concrete events of history, and the tension between theology and the discipline of history or historiography. I will not review the history of modern problems in this domain which is often part of an introduction to christology. But that history shows the tension is a perennial issue in christology because it has to do with the very structure of the discipline. The issue is easily illustrated with questions entertained in trying to understand Jesus' resurrection: is the resurrection to be understood as an historical event, that is, an event of history? Do the apparition stories have any historical authenticity? Was there really an empty tomb? |
