Cette difficulté qu’a en vue Siewerth, revient justement à ceci que la métaphysique thomiste ne semble pas rendre suffisamment compte de ladifférenceenDieu. Siewerth considère au fond que la présentation de Dieu que fournit saint Thomas, et une certaine tradition thomiste à sa suite, est par trop marquée du sceau de l’identité, et ce au détriment de la différence: Dieu y serait en effet caractérisé en termes trop unilatéraux d’unité, de simplicité et de substance (comme «acte pur»); Siewerth estime cependant qu’une pensée de la différence n’est pas absente du système thomiste, mais qu’elle y est pour ainsi dire comme latente, à l’état de potentialité non réalisée. In approaching the question of the difference inGod, Gustav Siewerth attempts to cast light on an “obscure area” in the Thomist system, i.e. an internal speculative difficulty which Thomas’ metaphysies was unable to resolve. This difficulty is that Thomist metaphysics does not appear to take sufficiently into account thedifference in God. Basically, Siewerth considers that the presentation of God by St. Thomas and part of the Thomist tradition is excessively marked by the stamp of identity, thereby neglecting difference. He objects that God is characterized in excessively unilateral terms of unity, simplicity and substance (as “pure act”). However, he considers that the notion of difference is not absent from the Thomist system, but that it is, so to speak, latent or in the state of unrealised potentiality. |
