The medieval Arab grammatical theory, especially in its later development, is described, by and large, as a formal system comprising a set of rules designed to provide a comprehensive account of the structure of classical Arabic. The grammarians' account is normally shown to concentrate on syntax and morphology, with hardly any systematic semantico-pragmatic analysis of the phenomena discussed.
