Journal: Le Muséon Volume: 112 Issue: 1-2 Date: 1999 Pages: 3-20 DOI: 10.2143/MUS.112.1.519487 Abstract : One might have expected that the publication, in 1986, of a four-author monograph on the text-criticism and literary-history of the David and Goliath story (1 Sam. 17) would have left scholars with nothing more to say on the subject. In fact, however, discussion of the chapter has continued unabated since then. In this essay I wish to take a more detailed look at a text which is sometimes cited in passing in treatments of 1 Sam. 17, i.e. Josephus' version of the episode as found in his Antiquitates Judaicae (hereafter Ant.) 6. 170-1923. More specifically, my discussion will focus on two overarching questions: 1) which textform(s) of 1 Sam. 17 did Josephus employ in composing Ant. 6. 170192; and 2) how, why, and with what effect has he retold the David and Goliath story? |
