Abstract :
In Kurdish studies, the Kurds of the former Soviet Union remain an exotic subject, although of considerable interest. Of the post-Soviet Kurds, those in Azerbaijan are probably the ones who are discussed most controversially among scholars and non-scholars alike. At the heart of that discussion is the question of so-called 'Red Kurdistan': It is often claimed that there once was a Kurdish autonomy in Azerbaijan, endowed with a number of Kurdish institutions, on the strip of land between Armenia and the Mountainous Karabakh, purportedly largely populated by Kurds; and that the demise of that entity was followed by anti-Kurdish measures, including mass deportations and the forced assimilatipn and statistical manipulation of those left behind.
