Abstract :
This article deals with the close connection between place-name research and dialectology. From the beginning, when place-name research was established at the end of the 19th century as a separate branch of art in the Nordic countries, decisive stress hits been laid on Collecting and utilizing the dialectal forms of place-names. This is especially true for the Scandinavian countries.
In this essay we emphasize three subjects. First we try to show that knowledge and insight in dialectology have been central in Nordic onomastics from the beginning. We can see this regarding the building of place-name collections with notations of the spoken forms of the names, and it is discernible in the use of dialect based names in several place-name monographs, probably the greater part.
Further we try to illustrate that results from place-name studies can be used in research of linguistic history and dialect geography, especially where phonological, morphological, and lexical items are concerned.
Thirdly, name loans into Scandinavian languages in language contact areas are discussed, especially where Finno-Ugric languages meet Germanic languages. First and foremost we here discuss the methodical aspect.
