Abstract :
This paper sets out to give a presentation of the research that has recently (i.e. in the latest ten years) been done on personal names and place-names in runic inscriptions. It does so by giving examples of different types of studies: general surveys of personal names and bynames in the Proto-Scandinavian inscriptions, studies dealing with the question of male versus female names in the Viking Age inscriptions, the influence Christian and other names of foreign origin has had on the Scandinavian onomasticon, interpretations of individual names etc.
Also studies focusing on morphological, orthographical, phonological and typological questions in connection with names receive attention, as does the dictionary of the Viking Age proper names in the Scandinavian runic inscriptions. That the runic material can provide important information to schollars interested in both personal names and place-names is also emphasized.
