In neither case could the manuscript utilized for the translation be identified. Methley, a Carthusian of Mount Grace, who according to his own statement never studied at a university, displays a highly competent Latinity and glossed both texts extensively. It seems unlikely that be was not aware that Margaret Porete's work had been condemned as hereticaL A fellow Carthusian, James Grenehalgh, an expert on mystical literature, glossed Methley's translations in turn, which have survived in a single manuscript, copied by the Carthusian William Darker. |
