Abstract :
In his contribution, originally delivered as a farewell lecture as professor in Freiburg, the author discusses not only -as others before him have done- the interlocking nature of spirituality and mysticism, but also commits himself to the priority of spirituality over theology. Since God's revelation only comes into its own in its being accepted by humans (for only when a gift has been accepted is it a gift in the full sense of the word), theology has its point of reference not only in an 'exterior', self-contained Word of God, but [also] in the spiritual consummation of the Word of God received by humans. Both with regard to the reasons for it and with regard to its implications, this thesis is supported by historical examples.
