Abstract :
In its church order, as well as in other documents of the general synod covering the period 1962-1998, the Dutch Reformed Church (mainly Southern Africa) showed a marked influence by Abraham Kuyper and neo-Calvinistic 20thcentury Dutch philosophers. This, as well as its close association with the Afrikaner nation and apartheid, resulted in the prophetic voice of the church being virtually unheard until 1986. During this year the approach changed, one of the factors being the influenceof the German-Swiss theologian Karl Barth.
