His special interest was history, especially the history of his own church. With his work on church history Macarius became the initiator and main source for further historiography in both the Melkite patriarchates of Antioch. Despite the fact that Antioch was in the 17th century an unimportant Ottoman provincial town without any political or religious significance, a place that barely showed signs of its great past, Macarius ibn al-Za'īm was well aware of its former greatness and importance. Macarius, who was one of the protagonists of the intellectual renewal amongst the Eastern Christians, reconstructed from the Greek sources the picture of a city that was renowned for its splendour and richness as well as its political and religious supremacy in the East. |
