Real contact between the two religions began only in modern times, and mainly in two forms. In the West it began with the discovery of Buddhism by Western Buddhologists, Orientalists, missionaries, travelers, and colonial administrators. In the East it occured as a consequence of Christian missionary activities accompanying the advance of Western colonialism in Asia. Today, the contact between Buddhism and Christianity is moving beyond that stage -a process still going on- to a creative spiritual encounter that may, as James Cobb suggests, result in a 'mutual' transformation' of the two traditions. |
