Abstract :
This article presents an analysis of Rutger Koplands poem ‘Boven het hooi’. The poetry of Rutger Kopland is marked by intimacy and subtlety. It contains mild and minutious evocations of love, tenderness, hope and remorse. Themes like loneliness and fear are not really unusual, but the poem ‘Boven het hooi’ stands out by its suggestion of extreme brutality. This might have to do with the evolution of Koplands poetry from figurative and anecdotal towards less defined and more abstract ways of exploring his themes. In ‘Boven het hooi’, the anecdote is definitely left behind. The narrating cat steps forward to comfort the reader for the loss of this all too easily (mis)interpreted anecdotal poetry.
