Abstract :
Sometimes archaeological finds can provide us some insight in the medical knowledge and practices in the past. Especially medical instruments and their representations are very informative. Often the archaeological finds are boxes, etuis or cylindrical cases that contained these instruments. Only a few finds of this kind have been done in Egypt, the most famous being the representation of medical instruments on a wall of the temple of Kom Ombo. The article gives an overview of all known medical boxes etc. from Egypt from the first pharaonic dynasties to the Coptic period, and – based upon the collected data – gives an evaluation of the Egyptian medical knowledge.
