Document Details : Title: Der Zehnte Brief Pachoms - eine verschlüsselte Botschaft Author(s): JOEST, Christoph Journal: Journal of Coptic Studies Volume: 5 Date: 2003 Pages: 67-96 DOI: 10.2143/JCS.5.0.503647 Abstract : The tenth letter of the pachomian writings is one of the most remarkable documents that we have of the great Upper Egyptian koinobiarch Pachomius (287-347). It is also one of the better attested. The author surveys the sources for this letter (in Coptic, Greek and Latin) and gives a translation of the text. The bigger part of the article concerns the content of this enigmatic letter, using a.o. numerology for its interpretation. The letter appears to be dealing with some transgressions of oikonomoi and Pachomius’ reaction to it. The article ends with some remarks concerning the writer of the letter (whether Pachomius wrote it or not). |
