Document Details : Title: Some Aspects of the Life and Death of Antiochus IV Epiphanus Subtitle: A New Presentation of Old Viewpoints Author(s): LOREIN, G.W. Journal: Ancient Society Volume: 31 Date: 2001 Pages: 157-171 DOI: 10.2143/AS.31.0.48 Abstract : Although there is no genuine consensus on the actions of Antiochus IV Epiphanes towards the Jews, one could say that the majority today follows a version of Bi(c)kerman(n)’s reconstruction, adapted to Bringmann’s dating, in which Antiochus IV only plays a minor role. In this article, I wish to take a different route: on the one hand I wish to return, naturally, to the sources (which initially should be assumed to be reliable), and to that other giant, Tcherikover. On the other hand I will be taking recent literature into account. I shall especially focus on the years 168-164, and therefore on the issue of the order of events after the second phase of the Sixth Syrian War as well as the exact circumstances of the death of Antiochus IV. |
