In all social strata, poems seem to have been the obvious means of expressing emotions, experiences and opinions, for keeping up social networks and for pure language play. It is argued that the influence of the chambers of rhetoric was a decisive factor in establishing this role of poetry. The case is illustrated with three 1650 texts: a view on the poetic works of Jacob Steendam, ship’s preacher in service of the West and East India Company; the song book of Hendrick Jansz. Prins, a Medemblik town organist and precentor; and a curious pamphlet about Breurken, the local fool of the town of Deventer. |
