Document Details : Title: Tonen en betogen. De dramaturgie van de Rotterdamse Spelen van 1561 Author(s): RAMAKERS, Bart Journal: Spiegel der Letteren Volume: 43 Issue: 3 Date: 2001 Pages: 176-204 DOI: 10.2143/SDL.43.3.388 Abstract : This article focuses on the humanist character of the sixteenth century rhetoricians’ drama by way of an analysis of structure, dramaturgy and staging of the 1561 Rotterdam plays. It is shown that the classical idea of the theatrum mundi (the world as a play, and the play as a mirror of the world) is deliberately expressed in the structure of the morality plays, above all in the method of changing perspective. In addition, subject matter and rhetorical argumentation show the plays to be genuinely humanist, ‘renaissance’ in character. They should therefore be recognised as such. |
