Abstract :
Though a considerable number of scholars have written about De Hondsdagen, Hugo Claus’s second great novel from 1952, some aspects of it have so far received scant attention. In this paper I argue, first, that the novel’s epigraph, taken from the blues song Black snake moan by Blind Lemon Jefferson, has been misinterpreted until now; and second, that the season in the main story of the novel is not autumn 1951 but spring 1951. The description of motifs like ‘the game of goose’, ‘being an artist’, ‘life as a film’ and ‘androgyny’ leads to an interpretation that differs substantially from previous accounts.
