Document Details : Title: Naso priorum primus Subtitle: Imitazione e infrazione nelle Epistolae Heroides di Boyd (1592) Author(s): SIMONETTI, Enrico Journal: Latomus Volume: 84 Issue: 3 Date: 2025 Pages: 545-560 DOI: 10.2143/LAT.84.3.3295230 Abstract : From the late sixteenth century until the early eighteenth century, Ovid’s Epistulae Heroides influenced the widespread genre of the heroic epistle. While its popularity grew across Europe, the Scottish poet Mark Alexander Boyd wrote the answers from the male characters to Ovid’s heroines as well as fifteen fictitious epistles from mythological women or female figures from ancient history. This contribution aims to examine Boyd’s imitation of Ovid’s Heroides by evaluating the differences in structure and rhetorical features. In addition to ancient sources, the author also looks at the influence of neo-Latin authors on the work. |
