Document Details : Title: Epistemic Intuition under a Skill Model Subtitle: Roots of Mathematical Understanding Author(s): HEINZMANN, Gerhard Journal: Logique et Analyse Volume: 266 Date: 2024-2025 Pages: 321-339 DOI: 10.2143/LEA.266.0.3294842 Abstract : This paper attempts to provide that epistemic intuition in mathematics, if interpreted according to a skill-model – rather than according to the common perception model – can contribute to a better understanding of mathematical activities as well in the context of invention as in the context of justification. After describing the difficulties of a classical perceptual model of epistemic intuition, we propose to overcome them by a pragmatic approach. As an application of the resulting skill-model of intuition, we show that in this interpretation epistemic intuition can be helpful for a better insight into non-logical mathematical inferences, it can be used for characterizing mathematical thought experiments, and can give hints for overcoming the widely discussed taxonomy of eliminatory and non-eliminatory structuralism. |
