Abstract :

One can find, in the compilation Supplément turc 1195 of the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, a «letter of friendship» (mektûb-ı vedâd) sent in August 1533 by grand vizier İbrâhîm Paşa to Hayr ed-Dîn Barbarossa, who still was at that time vassal king of Algiers. The publication of this unpublished document gives the opportunity to deal with different topics. First, a new reading is proposed of İbrâhîm Paşa’s pençe. Secondly, the grand vizier’s letter informs us about a third mission in France of Zorzi Gritti, brother of Alvise Gritti. This secret mission, which is attested by the very presence of this letter in Paris, is to be understood in the context of a Franco-Ottoman military alliance, for the grand vizier promises to the king of France the collaboration of Barbarossa’s fleet and Zorzi Grittis’s flotilla. This is a new confirmation of İbrâhîm Paşa’s implication in the French alliance. Lastly, the content of the letter confirms that in August 1533, one didn’t think at the Porte of summoning Hayr ed-Dîn to Istanbul, but rather of making him contribute to maintain the Spanish forces in the Western Mediterranean, while the Ottomans were preparing an eastern campaign against the Safavids.
