Abstract :
This article suggests that several clues in Joshua 12:9-24 hint at a redaction in the Achaemenid period. Of special interest is the use of Persian numbers, with 29 or 31 defeated kings, as well as the noted absence of Shechem in Joshua 12:9-14. The most favorable period is the second half of the fifth century BCE.
