Abstract :

If the limits of action have never really troubled a positive philosophy which the experience of a setback does not stop, they are by contrast at the heart of reflection attentive to the very existence of acting man and the way in which he takes on the finitude of his being in the world. The uncertainty of deliberation, the anguish of deciding, and the pain of achieving: these are the forms in which these limits appear. However, they raise a problem which meeting with the tragic accentuates: how can we act in spite of the possible – and sometimes inevitable – failure of our actions? This problem obliges us to consider afresh the capacities of acting man. But it also concerns, more radically, the time of action – a time that shows itself divided between projects and hope.
