Nina Collins found a foundation to this point of view in the variants of the Septuagint. This article re-evaluates this thesis by means of a textual and semantic studies freed from the a priori concept of two exodic traditions of flight and expulsion. It turns out that the Septuagint variants are both ambiguous and secondary. First among these is the adverb «κρυφῇ» ('secretly') of Ex 11:2, particularly cited as lighting the implicit meaning of the Hebrew text. This article shows that it is rather an addition of the Septuagint, the meaning of which does not coincide with the Hebrew expression «באזני העם». The other variants as well are far from confirming the precedence of the Greek version over the Hebrew manuscripts. Thus, the idea of the despoiling of Egypt by borrowings during a flee does not proceed from the Hebrew Vorlage behind the Greek text. However, the latter could give rise to this reading without it coming from either an exodic tradition or its source text. |
